Blog II: Career Choices

Think about a career you want after finishing school.  Now, I know some of you indicated unease about picking a direction this early; however, you will be starting the cover letter and resume assignment in a week.  It would be a good idea to start researching an occupation.  For this blog, please answer the following questions in two paragraphs:

I. What is the job?  Describe the daily tasks, even hours, if applicable.

II.  What are the qualifications (degree, certifications, special classes) required?

III. What is the annual income and does it cover your needs?

I am currently a certified graphic designer. My goal after completing college is to have my own business and design services. Graphic design is being able to communicate an idea(any idea) through text(typography and calligraphy) and visuals(pictures, drawings and graphics.) Daily tasks vary on the type of graphic designer you are and where you work. As a freelance designer, I personally deal with many phone calls, emails, texts and meetings. I am in charge of my own hours but I pretty much work on a daily. I am constantly communicating with clients making sure I make their ideas come to life. I mainly focus on developing logos, website icons, websites, magazine spreads, business cards and banners. As I build my clientele my services will only increase.

Graphic design is flexible in the sense that anyone who tries hard enough can succeed in this field. You do not have to go to a fancy/expensive school. Although, some designers do this this it is not a necessity. I completed my certificate for graphic design at Cape Coral Technical College in 10 months for under 3,000 dollars. There I was also about to become certified in 4 adobe programs. People believe you must be good at drawing to even consider being a designer but that is not the case either.

Annual income also varies by the type of graphic designer you are and where you work. A freelance designer can make anything between 20,000 and 60,000 a year.
